How Sage Intacct Handles Revenue Recognition for Construction

Construction projects don’t follow a neat accounting calendar. A job might start in March, stretch across multiple reporting periods, and change along the way as costs shift, change orders come in, and retainage builds up. That can make revenue recognition for construction a challenge, especially when the information you need lives in different spreadsheets or systems.
With the relevant construction features configured, Sage Intacct connects project costs, contract details, billing, and WIP reporting so you can spend less time reconciling numbers and get a clearer picture of how each job is performing.
Why Construction Revenue Recognition Gets Complicated
Under ASC 606, you recognize revenue as you satisfy performance obligations. For construction contracts that meet the criteria for recognition over time, you need a consistent method that faithfully depicts progress toward satisfying each performance obligation. Where appropriate, revenue recognition for construction contractors uses a cost-to-cost input method, comparing eligible costs incurred to date with total estimated eligible costs and applying that percentage to the transaction price allocated to the performance obligation. The calculation itself is fairly straightforward, but keeping the inputs current gets complicated as the job progresses.
Estimated costs can shift as work progresses, especially when subcontractor invoices arrive later than expected or a change order affects the contract value and expected margin. If your project managers and accounting professionals are working from different numbers, month-end can quickly turn into a reconciliation exercise.
How Sage Intacct Connects Project Data to Revenue
Sage Intacct Construction brings your project costs, contract values, estimates, and billing into the same platform. As costs post to a job through Sage Intacct job costing, you can compare them with your estimates and use that information to calculate percent complete. If an estimate to complete changes, you can reflect that change in the information used for revenue recognition through configured estimate and WIP workflows.
Accounting and project management can then review the updated forecasts together. Configured dimensional reports can help you analyze revenue by project or customer, with phase or cost-code detail where revenue is assigned at that level. Sage Intacct’s dimensional structure gives you different ways to look at performance without creating a separate chart of accounts for every job.
WIP Reporting in Sage Intacct
Your work in progress (WIP) schedule pulls together earned revenue, billings to date, and the difference between the two, helping you see where individual jobs are overbilled or underbilled. Sage Intacct builds WIP reporting from your project data, so you can see which jobs are ahead on billing and which have earned revenue that exceeds billings.
After review and finalization, you can post WIP overbilling and underbilling adjustments to configured general ledger accounts. Instead of piecing together a WIP schedule from multiple sources, you have a period-specific view that can be refreshed and reviewed you can use when reporting to leadership, lenders, and bonding companies.
Managing Change Orders & Retainage
By the time a construction project reaches completion, it may look quite different from the original contract. In construction accounting, change orders affect contract value, costs, and potentially your margin, so leaving them outside your revenue recognition process can quickly distort the numbers. Sage Intacct Construction supports change-order workflows and updates to contract values and estimates. Pending and approved changes need to be evaluated separately before inclusion in revenue calculations.
That helps keep your percent-complete calculations tied to what’s currently happening on the project. You can track retainage separately as well. When a customer holds back part of a payment until the project is complete, Sage Intacct keeps retainage receivable and payable separate from regular balances, helping you distinguish retained amounts from amounts currently due.
Progress Billing & Revenue Recognition
If you use progress billing, you don’t want billing information and revenue recognition living in separate worlds. Sage Intacct supports progress billing with schedules of values, using project contract information. Billing schedules and revenue recognition remain separate accounting processes.
You can also manage fixed-price, cost-plus, and time-and-materials contracts in the same system, giving you a consistent reporting environment even when the way you structure and bill your projects varies from job to job.
Better Visibility into Project Performance
Accurate revenue recognition helps you understand how individual jobs are performing while there’s still time to use that information. Configured dashboards help you monitor project margins using recorded costs and current estimates, while comparisons between estimated margins at bid time and actual margins at completion can reveal patterns across project types, regions, or project managers.
Over time, those comparisons can give you useful context for future bids. You can see where estimates have lined up with actual results, where margins have slipped, and which types of work have performed well for your business.
How BPM Can Help with Sage Intacct
Your revenue recognition process depends on how Sage Intacct is configured for the way you run projects. Project structures, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition workflows all need to work together. The software supports these processes, while your accounting team remains responsible for the underlying judgments. BPM provides Sage Intacct services across the construction industry, helping companies implement, configure, and optimize Sage Intacct with both the technology and accounting requirements in mind.
We can help you build a setup that reflects how your projects work and gives you financial information you can use throughout the job. If your current revenue recognition process still involves too much manual reconciliation, contact us to talk about how Sage Intacct could support a more connected approach.
