In a panel session at the eBizQ virtual conference last week, Keith Swenson was asked, “What common mistake do people make that causes unnecessary delay in BPM projects?”

His answer: Their attempt at doing too much at once!

Swenson’s take is that the more you can automate a process, the lower the cost or running the process (although this does vary from process to process).

The best thing is to follow the Pareto principle. First kill the whales and then turn your attention to the smaller fishes in the pond.

“Start small, get a quick win, start seeing the benefit quickly, focus on the areas that need the most attention, continue to improve,” he says.

It makes sense because “besides facilitating transparent processes, Business Process Management (BPM) solutions deliver answers to questions about efficiency (doing things right) and effectiveness (doing the right things),” writes Dr. Wolfram Jost in group ARIS BPM Blog.

A recent Gartner note by Elise Olding (published 12 March 09) called "It's a Matter of Survival: Use BPM to Drive Out Costs" highlights the importance of BPM when facing challenging conditions.

“Process is their product,” declares Phil Gilbert about third party BPO operations. After his visit to India, where he had gone to meet his IT partner, Tata Consultancy Services and to open a new TCS-Lombardi Insurance Solutions Lab in Bangalore, Gilbert has come back mighty impressed with the Indian service providers.

Explaining the intricate (and hitherto missed) link between BPM and outsourcing, Gilbert says, “a great outsourcer may be better at quickly improving your business than you are because these companies have the cultural maturity required for BPM that eludes even the most progressive companies in the world.”

In this context, he cites a recent McKinsey research, according to which cultural maturity is the single biggest contributor to implementing change in any organization. In 2008, the McKinsey survey of 3,199 global executives found that only one transformation in three succeeds and the reason fro this is lack of cultural compatibility between various stakeholders. However when process becomes a product --- as it does for well-structured, well-accounted BPO operations, the result is pure alchemy.

Here, Gilbert hurries to explain that outsourcing deals also fail and even lead to worse processes (as they often have in the past), but increasing competition is now forcing process improvement even in India.

During his visit, he learned that increasingly deals are being assessed for their process outcomes (SLA's, KPI's) over the life of an offshore contract. In fact, in today’s scenario, there can be no BPO, without BPM, insists Gilbert.

“More and more companies are beginning to understand that business is change and when that's the case, process becomes your product,” he concludes.

Think about BPM as the layer between your people and your systems," declares Brandon Baxter ofLombardi. This in my opinion is a good metaphor. BPM could be the nourishing filling that holds two slices of bread together. “Unfortunately, a lot of BPM implementations still do a lot of "swivel chair" integration with multiple applications still visible on the screen, due in part to deficiencies of the BPMS and part because of the lack of services/integration layers in the enterprise applications,” notes Sandy Kemsley.

I however think these are just teething troubles that would go away once the infant (read BPM) grows up!

What is better? Earning by volume or by value? Die-hard BPM fans like Sandy Kemsley might say it is the former. That is why when Documententum developer edition of Content Server became free for download, she is the first to argue that since, “it's bound to increase acceptance, the revenue loss would be negligible.”

She links to CMS Watch, where analyst Alan Pelz-Sharpe is also quick to point out On trendwatch blog, that of late, EMC Documentum was inviting a lot of flak mainly for its poor support. Thankfully, things are beginning to change now. Just as they are changing at Microsoft, which has of late, become more responsive and improved dramatically on its service components, the blogger points out.

In L. Frank Baum’s the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, he brings up two hotly debated views of his time:

  • What is more important to common good? A preservation of individual rights or group rights? And second,
  • Is there a way to balance these two set of rights through a democratic tradition?

The answer to both the conflicts is ‘yes,’ which is what the BMP movement also seeks to accomplish.

On TEC blog, P.J. Jakovljevic (linked by Sandy Kemsley this week) Jakovljevic the author draws a parallel between the Oz world and today’s tech world, where the cookie-cutter approach to managing people or ideas doesn’t work anymore. Especially, in today’s resource-challenged world!

Although P.J. Jakovljevic’s post is a review of Pegasystems and its CEO, the parallel that he draws between the Oz inhabitants, chess players and techies could be an apt , is a true expression of the dominance of tech (read the wizard) on our lives.

The only difference between the two worlds in my opinion is that he quirky inhabitants of Oz are against an unfettered expression of their idiosyncrasies. They fear that such behavior would invite the wizard’s wrath and threaten the harmony of the state. However, the main goal of the BMP movement is to rid the world of such asymmetrical distribution of power and induce more collaboration. Anything other than this, would be undesirable.

Bruce Silver is all praise for IBM’s new BPM BlueWorks. Silver gives a laundry list of all the big and small things that IBM’s experiment in cloud computing can do for business managers {Please note not just architects, as Silver is careful in insisting}. My advice is go play with it. It’s free!

 

BPM BlueWorks can align your strategy, goals, and metrics with industry standard capabilities and process maps. Best of all, BlueWorks meshes seamlessly with a majority of the existing models and maps, such as eTom and of course, those from IBM’s own stable --- free of cost!

Therefore, plain “cool” is not the word Silver will use for BPM BlueWorks. He insists it goes much beyond that!

David McCoy BPM analogies, by his own admission are now becoming a little contrived. Take for instance, his most recent equation of a comforter with enterprise applications.  A comforter, he says does not work for all seasons and for all reasons and its ditto for enterprise applications. A little far fetched, wouldn’t you say?

Log in to find out how Patricia helps Plumber improve his plumbing services simply by working on his complaint redressal mechanism. The example taps into Bruce Silver’s three levels of BPMN to drive home the usefulness of process orientation in everyday jobs.

Sandy Kemsley’s second link discusses why you would want to externalize decisions from processes, in the first place.

Her trackback to Eric Koch’s post that contends that BPM is actually the “next level of maturity from an application perspective” for SOA, after integration. In other words, all three are inter-linked concepts.

Surprise! Surprise!

Bruce Silver is surprised at the “code freeze” OMG’s BMI list that describes BPMN 2.0 from the perspective of a process orchestration engine. “I haven’t heard such feigned surprise and indignation since Congress “discovered” the AIG bonuses,” he snides, although as an after thought he agrees with the howlers that BPMN 2.0 ignores the needs of business-level modeling.
